Karina’s Law Strengthens Protections for Survivors in Illinois

Illinois took a major step toward preventing domestic violence homicides with the implementation of Karina’s Law, which took effect in May 2025. Named in honor of Karina Gonzalez and her daughter Daniela, who were killed after Karina had obtained an order of protection, the law closes a critical gap in firearm enforcement. Under Karina’s Law, law enforcement agencies are required to seek a search warrant and remove firearms from individuals subject to qualifying orders of protection if they fail to voluntarily surrender them, helping ensure that protective orders are backed by timely action.

Research consistently shows that access to a firearm significantly increases the risk of intimate partner homicide. By establishing clear responsibilities for law enforcement and creating a more consistent process for firearm removal, Karina’s Law aims to make one of the most dangerous moments for survivors—immediately after seeking legal protection—safer. While no single policy can end domestic violence, this legislation represents an important advancement in protecting survivors and their families across Illinois.
