Chicago Expands Investment in Survivor Services

As of early June, Chicago has seen 52% fewer domestic violence homicides in 2026 compared to this time in 2025. Chicago and Cook County are continuing to strengthen support for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence through increased investments in critical services. In 2026, the City of Chicago expanded funding for gender-based violence programs to a record $23.2 million, while Cook County invested nearly $5 million to help community organizations provide emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, crisis intervention, and other essential resources for survivors.

These investments reflect a growing commitment to ensuring that survivors have access to the support they need to achieve safety and healing. Funding also continues to sustain initiatives like Chicago’s Survivor Emergency Fund, which provides direct financial assistance to help individuals meet urgent needs such as housing, food, transportation, and other necessities while escaping abusive situations. By partnering with local nonprofits and advocates, Chicago and Cook County are helping build a stronger network of services that empowers survivors and promotes healthier, safer communities.
